Thinking About Becoming a Beauty Educator? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’ve been working in the beauty industry for a while, you may have thought about sharing your skills and becoming a beauty educator. Teaching others is not only rewarding but also a fantastic way to build a sustainable career, expand your business, and leave a legacy in the industry.

But where do you start? Here are the key things you need to know before taking the leap.

1. Experience Counts

Before you teach others, it’s important to have solid hands-on experience yourself. Students will look to you not just for techniques, but for your real-world knowledge—like how to deal with clients, build a business, and overcome common challenges. Your expertise becomes your biggest asset as an educator.

2. You’ll Need the Right Qualification

To teach accredited beauty courses in the UK, you’ll need a Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET).

This qualification is your first step into teaching and covers:

• How to plan and deliver lessons

• Understanding different learning styles

• Assessing students fairly and confidently

It’s designed to give you the foundation skills you need to feel confident teaching in a professional setting.

3. Decide What You Want to Teach

Think about your strengths. Are you a lash expert, a facial specialist, or maybe nails are your passion? Starting with the treatments you love most makes teaching easier and more enjoyable. You can always expand your course menu later once you’ve built confidence. You must be qualified in the subject you wish to teach for a minimum of 6 months.

4. Choose Accreditation & Support

If you want your students to gain recognised qualifications, you’ll need to partner with an accrediting body such as ABT CPD, or The Guild. Accreditation ensures your courses are professional, insurable, and attractive to students.

Tip: Some training academies (like mine!) also offer mentorship and lifetime support, which can be a huge help as you take your first steps into teaching.

5. Think Beyond the Classroom

Being a beauty educator isn’t just about passing on techniques it’s about inspiring confidence, guiding career paths, and supporting students long after they’ve completed their course. The most successful educators are mentors as well as teachers.

Final Thoughts

Becoming a beauty educator is a natural next step for many experienced therapists. It allows you to share your passion, help others grow, and create a lasting impact in the industry. With the right qualification, accreditation, and support, you’ll be ready to inspire the next generation of beauty professionals.
